About this deal

They started dating shortly after the last book when they went on a few dates and then they kissed more and then they started dating. I loved how she could go through college with Jere right by her side. I know that there’s this saying that you shouldn’t go to college with your boyfriend, but if it’s Jeremiah Fisher, you do 👏🏼. College freshman Belly Conklin was in love with Conrad Fisher for most of her life. Her mother Laurel was best friends with Conrad’s mother, Susannah, so Belly and her mom would go stay at the Fishers’ summer house in Cousins Beach every summer. Belly’s childhood dreams of dating Conrad came true in high school, but Conrad’s emotional distance eventually broke them up. Susannah’s death from cancer drove them further apart, and Belly began dating Conrad’s younger brother, Jeremiah. Jeremiah had sex with Lacie when he and Belly were broken up. Multiple characters assume that the only reason Belly is marrying Jeremiah is because she’s pregnant.

He had to take that thorn out himself, and that’s not easy. It’s not easy to confront your anger and pain and say, I’m removing it from my life and moving on. To figure out what healing looks like. He just wanted Belly to be happy even if that meant he wasn’t the one who was making her happy 😭. Honestly, that’s pure, honest love right there—if they love you to let you go because your happiness matters more. Belly has loved Conrad for a lifetime it seems, but he's kept his feelings to himself, choosing not to do anything to change their dynamic. After the summer she turns 16, they give their relationship a try, but amid family drama and Susannah passing away, Conrad pulls away and tells Belly to be with Jeremiah instead.I knew I shouldn’t even be at the summer house, because being there, being near her, I would just want what I couldn’t have. It was dangerous. She was the one person I didn’t trust myself around . . . If she knew how much I still cared, it was all over. I wouldn’t be able to walk away again. The first time was hard enough.” (pg. 162-3)

Jere does deserve someone who wants to be with him and someone who will give all that love to him and not have it split between someone else. If she loved Jere, she would love him with her whole heart and no less. Second, what was this promise Conrad was talking about? I knew it had to come from Susannah though because there is no one else who would have asked him to take care of Jere like a big brother. The entire series though, it never felt like Jere was the one she was going to end up with because Belly loved Conrad so much more. I guess, there really is power in your first love and you never forget your first love. And sometimes, people can love each other so much and that love be real, but they’re just not meant to be together compared to with someone else.Jeremiah was trying to prove that he loved Belly enough to marry her and that their love was stronger than Belly’s love with Conrad because she did choose to marry him. Belly wanted to prove that she also loved Jeremiah more than she loved Conrad and to prove to herself that she was over Conrad and could go through with the wedding to live a happy future with him. But they weren’t marrying each other for the right reasons. But they did love each other and that wasn’t something I ever doubted. I know in Conrad’s letter to Belly, he mentioned how he had dinner with Jere and how it felt awkward but Steven helped ease the tension and they just watched movies and talked like old times. I really wanted Steven to have his moment to shine more in this book too. I mean, he was more in the book, but Steven deserved more 😅. I also loved how Belly cut her hair while she was in Spain and that Jere and Belly had a friendship where he was talking to her and knew about her hair cut. Go Belly—becoming a new and stronger version of herself! Belly’s disappointment in Jeremiah makes her think of his brother, Conrad. She recalls how, six months earlier she had driven down to the Fishers’ beach house and stayed the night. Conrad showed up and the two of them shared fun conversations. Belly never told Jeremiah about that day because she felt guilty about it. That day made Belly realize that, even after a few years of dating Jeremiah, she was still in love with Conrad. When Conrad Fisher told a girl he loved her, he meant it. A girl could believe in that. A girl could maybe bet her whole life on it.
