About this deal

Furthermore, this will prove a very difficult task with every ‘ haint, demon, vampire‘ and ghastly apparition out to get in her way. The gravity of Thomas’s world never weighs down the story, which zips along with wit, humor, and sparkling dialogue.

I think I've always felt that way about her writing capabilities and it continues to show in this book. This also has some interesting explorations of familial relationships/dynamics that I found interesting. The book celebrates African American culture, history, and heritage while exploring complex themes and interpersonal relationships in an approachable manner. Internationally bestselling superstar author Angie Thomas makes her middle grade debut with the launch of an inventive, hilarious, and suspenseful new contemporary fantasy trilogy inspired by African American history and folklore. The gravity of Thomas's world never weighs down the story, which zips along with wit, humor, and sparkling dialogue. Over het algemeen gaat het heel erg vlot, maar vooral in het begin zitten er een aantal Engelse woorden en korte zinnen in die evengoed vertaald hadden kunnen worden.

Not that those were things that are relevant on the level of the story, but it still made me frown because I just didn't understand. Her Unremarkable best friend JP lives next door – but he is remarkable in his enthusiasm for the fantasy books of TJ Retro, and for hanging out with Nic.Again, just because a book is for kids, doesn't mean it should lack important storytelling elements. It has some elements of Black Panther plus Harry Potter plus African mythology, plus middle school characters who we care about. Others, not so much--like not being trusted to learn magic because you might use it to take revenge on an annoying neighbor. This is so much in conversation with Harry Potter/JKR and the way that stories/authors can betray their readers and it's just like *chef's kiss*.

When her godfather gives her a pen that she can send messages to whoever she thinks of she decides to contact her mother, trouble is Nic’s father hasn’t been completely honest with her about why it is just them and her actions change the course of her life forever.

Nic Blake and The Remarkables: The Manifestor Prophecy is the first book to a start of a new middle-grade fantasy series. While planning to override her father’s refusal to attend the book event with JP is one thing, the explosion that happens when her father is arrested by LORE is quite another.

And so begins a thrilling adventure involving shapeshifters, wizards, the devil’s daughter and even a dragon. While I was not the target audience of this book as a white, thirty-something woman, I just know that any child that sees themselves represented in the pages of this story is going to absolutely love it, and this makes me very happy. Internationally bestselling superstar author Angie Thomas makes her middle grade debut with the launch of a contemporary fantasy trilogy inspired by African American history and folklore. They welcome you in and offer you a safe place to go when you want to disappear from the world for a bit, and this is exactly what this book did. As you could expect, Angie Thomas is another one of those authors who couldn't be bothered to give some explanations on her inspirations. However, the first part of the novel it was a bit slow, and there are some other things I detail below. The word rougarou sounds very much like the French loup-garou, but whether that is a coincidence, and if it isn't, what the connection between the two of them is.
