About this deal

The natural follow-up to Springsteen’s hugely successful album The River should have been the hit-packed Born in the U. But I always remembered that Springsteen passed on the first of those questions, which surprised me.

Zane’s work has appeared in Rolling Stone and the Oxford American, and he has served as a vice president at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. But the songs that's are covered is illuminating, some of the inspiration has been covered before in interviews with Springsteen but never in as much detail. Released in 1982, two years after Springsteen’s first chart-topper The River, Nebraska is the album no-one wanted Bruce to make: stripped-back demos that never made it to the E Street band rehearsal room form the album’s ten tracks. If I’d gone in the studio and just introduced that music in a normal way, I don’t know if ‘Nebraska’ would ever have occurred. This ultimately led Springsteen to start talk therapy and, later on, as he candidly described in his 2016 memoir Born to Run, mood medication, and he continued with cognitive behavior modification. In this monthly series, Scott Timberg interviews musicians on the literary work that has inspired and informed their music.

The album hit number three on Billboard’s US LPs chart, but the booming title single stalled at number 23, even after Springsteen appeared on the covers of Time and Newsweek simultaneously. As the music industry rushed to greet the digital dawn, says Zanes, Springsteen made “a cave painting in the age of photography”. Years later,” Zanes adds, “it would seem Nebraska was the pulling back of the bow, and Born in the U. It is probably difficult for many Springsteen fans like me to engage with this person properly without it degenerating into unthinking and stupid hero worship. If Burke definitively proves one point over the course of the book, it’s that “Nebraska,” like the works of John Steinbeck, Flannery O’Connor, Martin Scorsese, Woody Guthrie, etc.
