About this deal

We anticipate that most children and young people who follow it will be in specialist provision of some kind. Pupils read in all subjects in the curriculum and will read different genres to develop their understanding about a topic. Released in September 2022 the Little Wandle Rapid Catch-up programme is for children in Year 2 and above who are not reading at the expected level for their age. Supporting the DfE validated SSP programme - Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised these fully decodable readers are an exciting mix of stories and non-fiction to foster a love of reading in all children.

The purpose of the screening check is to confirm that all children have learned phonic decoding to an age-appropriate standard. This could be by showing pictures or objects with the sound in and getting the children to guess or find the sound. Our Little Wandle SEND Programme has been developed to be used with the graduated approach to teach children to learn to read in small steps that provide the right amount of challenge. Phonics is delivered every day in Reception so that children have plenty of opportunities to revisit, practice and apply their phonic knowledge. You can also get your questions answered in person at one of our regular, free information briefings or by contacting our membership team.

Reading skills are taught discretely five times a week in 30-minute sessions for all pupils in both KS1 and KS2.

At WGPS we believe reading is essential for academic success but, more importantly, we value reading as a key life skill, and are dedicated to enabling our pupils to become lifelong readers. This could be done by using pictures, missing words in sentences, fill in the missing sounds, make words with the sound using letters displayed. Our Rapid Catch-up programme is for children in Year 2 and above who are not reading at the expected level for their age.

At Wooburn Green, we understand that being able to read is the most crucial skill that we can teach our children as without it they will find it increasingly difficult to access other areas of the curriculum and their life chances will be significantly reduced. Sorry to jump on this thread months later but my DS is using this reading programme also and has been reading the phase 5 books since yr 1. The resources on this page will help you support your child with saying their sounds and writing their letters.

We run regular free briefings about Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised and take care to run these at different times to ensure that as many schools as possible can attend. Our Foundations section includes a complete offer for Nurseries, which includes guidance, training and resources for three areas: Foundations for Phonics, Foundations for Language and Foundations for a Love of Reading. Our Phonics Book Bag Readers series includes a wide selection of diverse and inclusive stories, accompanied by bright and contemporary illustrations that will engage and inspire young readers. By the end of Pre-School, children are well prepared to begin learning grapheme-phoneme correspondences (GPCs) and blending in Reception. Ad an observation, the blue band books we’ve had home do seem very short compared to some of the other reading schemes.

Year 1 class teachers will hold a meeting for parents in the Spring term to ensure that parents feel confident in supporting their children during the phonics screening check. This means all children are given books that match their phonic ability and enable them to be successful at reading, in turn developing their love of reading for pleasure. My DS is currently reading at the hardest end of Phase 2 (summer born reception) which probably equates to the easier end of red books using the list someone linked earlier. Most purchases from business sellers are protected by the Consumer Contract Regulations 2013 which give you the right to cancel the purchase within 14 days after the day you receive the item. These short, sharp lessons last 15-20 minutes daily and have been designed to ensure children quickly catch up to age-related expectations in reading.Using Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised with SpLd children will be more about what exact conditions a school is working with. He's pretty fluent now in the phase 5 so just waiting to see whether these 7+ books are offered next or something else more challenging. I too don’t really like the uncertainty of this being a new scheme not directly comparable with the old book bands as it’s harder to choose what books to read together at home of a similar level. The progress in the phases seems much more regimented, so I think we’ll be “stuck” on stage 4 for quite a while…. Keep-up lessons match the structure of class teaching, and use the same procedures, resources and mantras, but in smaller steps with more repetition, so that every child secures their learning.
