About this deal

Some aspects of her minimalism were interesting, but, at least to me, the whole project felt like a forced attempt at a pseudo-avantgarde reinterpretation. That could also be true, if the illustrations were done in such a way that viewers knew those two themes were intended.

It captures, too, the rift between our everyday efforts to keep ourselves busy, and infinite tragedy: that raw nick between Tuesday and death. Some words are translated directly, some are paraphrased, but it’s all still there, yet it’s different. If the comic effect is unintentional, it's inept; if intentional, it's a joke few members of a contemporary audience are going to get. The book needs to be held, the overlays played with, and the ability to flip back support by the physical text.Ismene herself is, in some sense, a soldier for the status quo, preferring to support a corrupt government than defend her own rights. There’s a sense of things being wrapped up, a kind of childishness in his seesaw of words: “Late to learn O yes I am/late too late O then O then …” He blames the chorus for bringing him the awful news. Carson remains connected at least tangentially to original meanings, but she adds further layers of meaning that come solely from the mind of Anne Carson, as a poet, and as a reader of Sophocles, and as a unique individual woman living in the 21st century. Carson twists the end of the play with an invented character, Nick, who never speaks but is always on stage, measuring. Repito que no soy una experta en la materia, aunque no creo que a los expertos le importe mucho todo esto, al fin y al cabo, he aquí este libro.

Most curious of all the cast is Nick, a silent part that spends the entire play on stage measuring things. Carson also induced me to pick George Steiner's Antigones off my shelf where it had languished for decades and read it straight through. i was in a production of antigone two years ago and it was kind of an earth-shattering experience that forged within me a deep bond with the play.Sophokles’ luminous and disturbing tragedy is here given an entirely fresh language and presentation: it will provoke poetry readers, classical scholars, theatre people and comic-book aficionados.
